Fourteen

I’m not going to let someone throw me away again.

“Rose!” Everything was blurry. Tracy’s concerned face appeared on the edge of my vision. I closed my eyes again.

That idiot.

“She’ll be OK.” I couldn’t see her but I knew that voice belonged to Agatha.

I opened my eyes. I was in my own bed. The room was dark. As I propped myself up, a healing balm fell off my head onto my lap. I scrunched my eyes shut. Had I just dreamed that Tracy and Agatha had been in here? From what I knew, only Agatha had healing balms.

We didn’t need to eat or drink in the Underworld, but that didn’t stop my mouth from feeling parched. I swallowed and tried to create more saliva in my mouth. I sat in the semi-darkness for another five minutes as I came to my senses.

Reality wasn’t kind to me. In fact, noticing that I was conscious and awake, it took a sledgehammer and crunched it into my chest. My heart hurt as if… well, as if someone had just driven a knife through it. The memories of the last half an hour while I was in the Overworld replayed through my mind in fast forward, over and over. It moved so quickly I felt dizzy just thinking about it. It only slowed down when it came time to me driving the kitchen knife into my own heart, as if my mind was sitting next to me with a bucket of popcorn saying, “wait, wait, here’s the good part.”

I shook my head violently, dissipating the memory before it had a chance to replay itself again. I swung my legs out of the bed and tentatively got to my feet. Exhaling, I crossed the floor towards my door.

I stood in the doorway, looking around the circular room. Each of the doors to the other Deliverers’ rooms was closed. Actually, that was a lie. The one at the end that Tor had crashed into when Death had thrown in was open.

“Hey.” Tracy stood in the doorway. Her hair was down as she leaned casually against the door frame. “How are you feeling?”

I stared at her for a few seconds before I knew it, I had fallen apart. I crumpled onto the floor, a pathetic puddle of misery and pain. I thought I was numb to it, but all I wanted to do was feel. Feel the regret of not being able to save Tor. Feel the pain of losing him to Matylda. Feel him cupping my chin again with his large hand.

Tracy swept across the room and joined me on the floor. She held me, rocking me steadily. “Sssh, sssh, sssh…” A bolt of pain ripped through my heart, causing me to cry even louder. Agatha’s door opened and she glided across the room towards me as well.

She dipped down and grabbed me by my under arm. “Come on dear. Let’s go somewhere more comfortable.”
